Total sales of the CTS family rose 124 percent to 6,033 in February. The CTS Coupe, introduced for the 2011 model year, had its best month since being launched last August. The CTS Sedan and Wagon also posted strong gains for the month.

Hundreds of Nissan Z enthusiasts are expected to descend on Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) headquarters this week for the 23rd Annual International Z Car Convention in Nashville. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the original Datsun 240Z. One of the highlights of the convention, which runs from July 28th through August 1st, will be a day-long car show on Saturday on the front lawn of Nissan’s recently opened headquarters building in Franklin, Tennessee.

Other convention events in the surrounding Nashville area include a Z Cruise to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, motorsports activities at Nashville Super Speedway, and tours of downtown Nashville and Nissan’s Smyrna, Tenn. manufacturing facility. A number of former Z racers will also be on hand, including John Morton, Peter Brock and Steve Millen. Yutaka Katayama, “the father of the Z,” is scheduled to appear by live video feed from Japan during the convention’s closing banquet. “Mr. K,” as he is affectionately known around the world, celebrated his 100th birthday in late 2009. The convention is being presented by the Z Car Club Association.

New and Improved Platform

The 2011 Sportage is all-new, including its platform, which has been completely redesigned for the new CUV. With an overall length of 174.8 inches, overall width of 73 inches, wheelbase of 103.9 inches, Sportage is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor, enhancing handling and aerodynamics. Built on a unibody frame, Sportage utilizes independent front-and-rear suspension systems. MacPherson struts are used in the front and have been fine-tuned to improve feel and stability, while new side-load coil springs reduce friction. An all-new, multi-link rear suspension system is used in conjunction with new dampers and coil springs mounted separately to minimize intrusion into the cabin and trunk space and add to Sportage’s handling.

SPORT-TUNED SUSPENSION

Genesis Coupe employs a MacPherson® strut dual-link front suspension and a five-link independent rear suspension setup.The front suspension is mounted to the body via a solid subframe which is lighter and stronger than a multi-piece component would be. For the 2011 MKX, engineers integrated the new 3.7-liter V6 engine, which uses twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) to increase the vehicle’s power and fuel economy. The broadened torque curve allows the intake valve to be advanced, delivering about a 10 percent power increase compared to non-Ti-VCT engines. Variable timing control of both the intake and exhaust camshafts helps extract more energy from each drop of fuel, leading to a 4.5 percent improvement in fuel economy.

The engine also employs a control strategy called aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff to save fuel. This strategy shuts off the engine when the driver doesn’t need engine torque. It uses the momentum from the torque delivered to the transmission to move the vehicle, rather than more fuel.

“If you’re putting out a fuel-efficient car that’s also got great styling and is affordable, right now may be the time to focus your messaging on the style and affordability because gas prices aren’t such a concern for consumers right now,” Perry says. “But when gas prices go back up – and we’ve seen that they can quickly – on-line marketing allows you to quickly change your message to appeal to that consumer need as it becomes more important.”

With gas prices moderating and the economy on the rebound, AutoTrader.com’s used car list is seeing a return to stability, with the top 11 most viewed cars in June holding the exact same positions they held in May and with used car prices generally trending up.

“Without the gas shocks and the negative economic news we’ve lived with the past few years, you see a return to the normal patterns of popularity with used cars,” said Perry. “Used Ford Mustangs, Honda Accords, BMW 3-Series, Jeep Wranglers and other perennial favorites find their place on our list and stay there, not moving up or down too dramatically unless some extraordinary event causes a change in consumer behavior.”

Traffic to AutoTrader.com continued to be strong, with the site recording 16.03 million unique monthly visitors in June. Having hit an all time record of 16.8 million unique visitors in May, June’s numbers represented the second consecutive month AutoTrader.com surpassed 16 million unique monthly visitors.
